The GenNext Project

Enabling Australia’s young hairdressers to reach their potential

Hair Expo Australia’s GenerationNext Gala has always been committed to supporting young talent and is this year furthering its commitment to help the next generation realise its creative ability. As the annual platform for our up and coming hairdressers, in 2011 Hair Expo and one of Australia’s top educators is providing five young stylists with the backing needed to be part of this amazing event.

The GenNext Project is a joint initiative between Hair Expo and 2010 Educator of the Year, Sharon Blain. Kicking off with an Australia-wide search, five winning stylists will get the chance to produce their own collaborative show at the GenerationNext Gala on June 12, under Sharon’s direction. Not only will the project provide the opportunity to learn from one of the greatest mentors in the industry, it will also contribute to production costs involved – often a stumbling block for young hairdressers.

To be in the running, applicants need only submit a short video outlining why they think they should be selected and containing samples of their work. The industry will then have the chance to comment on its favourites via the Hair Expo Facebook page, before Sharon and the Hair Expo team select the finalists.

Once the team has been chosen, a two-day workshop will be held in Sydney with Sharon Blain and the Art of Hair team, where winners will create the concept and start planning the production of their show. The workshop also coincides with the annual awards cocktail party – announcing finalists in all categories of the 2011 Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo Awards – where the team will be given the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in the hairdressing business.

The GenNext Project team will display their collaborative show as one of the productions in the GenerationNext gala on the Sunday night at Hair Expo.

Excited to be part of the initiative, Sharon said: "This finally gives the ‘not-usual suspects’ a true chance to shine and is a great way for us to give back to the industry."

Julia Erben, Hair Expo Event Director, added: "It’s thanks to Sharon and her relentless and generous strive to grow new talent that we’ve been able to create what could be a truly life changing experience for some of these hairdressers."
